What is unclaimed property?
Unclaimed property consists of various types of intangible personal property. Savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks, securities, dividends, insurance refunds or claims, oil royalties, wages, utility refunds/ deposits, bail bonds, and child support payments are examples of unclaimed property. What is a "holder"?
Holders include, but are not limited to financial institutions, insurance companies, oil and gas companies, hospitals, clinics, business corporations, state and local governmental entities, and retailers. What if there is no unclaimed money in my name?
The government agencies require account holders to transfer abandoned money to them almost monthly. The government agencies try to update their databases frequently, so even if your name is not on the list of unclaimed property, it is recommended to check back again, preferably every 30 days.

What happens to the money that remains unclaimed by eligible accountholders?
Most agencies are serving a custodian holding the unclaimed money in perpetuity – it will be available until the rightful owner or heir comes forward to claim. However, two States are currently of the position if the money is not claimed within some many years the unclaimed money becomes the property of the State.

Unclaimed property laws have been enacted to prevent holders of unclaimed property from taking citizens' unclaimed property and recognizing it as business income. These laws gives the state an opportunity to return money to its rightful owners or their heirs.

What information do I need to claim the money I find with Find Lost Money?
Find Lost Money will provide all you with up to 8 fields of the unclaimed account information necessary for you to confirm the account is yours and for you to contact the Government agency holding the account. When you contact the Government agency, you will most likely need to provide them with one or more of the following:
  Social Security Number
  Birth Certificates
  Marriage Certificates
  Death Certificate (if the owner is a relative and has passed away)
  Proof of Previous Addresses
  Identification Such as Drivers Licenses or Passports

What is a Free Search versus a Detailed Search?
To determine if your name is listed in our database, you will need to do a free search on our homepage. This Free Search allows you to check as many names as you like, totally free of charge, to determine whether there is any unclaimed money available under those names. Once you have located your name, a relative’s name a Detailed Search is the next step in the process of claiming your money. Upon purchasing a membership with Found Money, you will able to login to our Member’s Area to start your Detailed Search. This is where you will receive all of the account details and contact information necessary for you or your family members to claim the money you find.

I found unclaimed under my name, what do I do next?
Click on your Name to purchase a membership. Upon approval, enter your name again to discover (per below example) which Government agency is holding your unclaimed money so as to submit your Claim Application.

How many different names can I search?
You may search for any name you like. Some States purport that their records go back to the late 1800s and if the State’s inserted those records into their system, then our database includes them. You can search as many names as you wish for free using our Free Search.

Can I search for just my family name?
Yes. When you begin your search, enter your Last Name in the query box without a First Name. Then you click the "Search” button and you will see a list of all the accounts with your last name. Please note that with common names there may be thousands of matches, which may result in very slow loading, especially with older browsers and dial-up Internet connections.

What does the letter or abbreviation after my name mean?
Yes it can. Our database is so large and comprehensive, one needs to be specific. The records are posted in our database as they were posted when the original account was created by the Owner. If the Owner signed the account as John S. Smith, then the record will only come up with a Smith(space)John(space)S query click Search Hints for more information.

What do I receive with my $5.95 Membership?
A $5.95 Membership entitles you to search for one name in our "Detailed Search" area. For each name you search, you will receive all of the account details listed under that name. For example, if you search "Smith John" and we may have 60 accounts listed under that name, you will be able to view the details of all 60 accounts to determine which of them belong to you. This counts as one of your five searches.

Can I just buy one search?
Yes. For a limited period only, you can now buy only one search from us for only $5.95. We currently have three other different search packages available: $9.95 for 3 detailed searches, $14.95 for 5 detailed searches, and $20.95 for 10 detailed searches. As a special offer, we are giving away 3 bonus searches with our $20.95 package. This offer runs till June 30, 2008. Your Membership entitles you to search one, three, five, or ten different names in our Internet’s largest unclaimed money database. For each query, you will receive up to nine fields of information concerning the record listed under that name.

I don’t have a credit card; can I still use your service?
Through Paypal there are two different payment options to choose from:

  2. PayPal now accepts e-checks. If you pay by e-check, it may take up to 4-5 business days before your account gets activated.

What is Find Lost Money's Membership Guarantee?
WE GUARANTEE that if the account on our list belongs to you and you attempt to claim it, YOU WILL RECEIVE THE MONEY OWED TO YOU or we will refund 100% your Membership fee! NO refunds will be issued if a membership was used for commercial purposes. In order to receive a refund of your Membership purchase you must fill out the appropriate financial institution claim form that corresponds with the unclaimed account in our database within six months. Once you receive a written document from the Government Unclaimed Property Division that they attempted to match your account via SSN, and/or Drivers License, but were unsuccessful, you must fax or mail a copy of that document to Find Lost Money to receive a 100% refund of your Membership fee. No refunds will be issued after six months from the date of purchase.

No. Once you have paid our Search fee, any funds found by you are yours. We do not charge an Asset or Heir Finder fee.

What does “not disclosed” or “unknown” in the detailed information mean?
For search results that appear "not disclosed" there is valid unclaimed money associated with this name however it is not posted for one of several reasons:

  • The Government agency has a by law which does not allow the $ amount to be posted for privacy reasons.
  • The unclaimed asset is a security and its dollar value can change daily.
  • The unclaimed asset could be contents for an abandoned safety deposit box and its value cannot be determined.

For search results that have some “unknown” information means simply that this information was not available or was not part of the original account document when the Owner created the account.

How does Find Lost Money track account usage?
Find Lost Money logs the IP Address of the user along with date and time when the search was made. IP Addresses are traceable to the exact geographical area and uniquely identify the computer on the network.
